New film takes Santa Cruz
kids on eco odyssey
by Wallace Baine for the Santa Cruz Sentinel
"Mosquito in the Room" is a thoughtful
documentary with interviews of Santa Cruz locals who've been pondering the
intractable problem of global warming. But, in this case, the sober-minded interviewers
are not yet experienced with the ravages of adolescence, much less climate
change… "Mosquito" -- which plays as part of the "Locals
Only" shorts program at the Santa Cruz Film Festival at noon Saturday --
is centered on a handful of local kids as they corner adults to ask them about
environmentalism, human responsibility to be stewards of the planet, and what
the future may hold… [more]

focus of a new film opening the Santa Cruz Film Festival. "Gospel
Hill," directed by the well-known character actor Giancarlo Esposito,
brings an impressive A-list cast "" Danny Glover, Angela Bassett,
Samuel L. Jackson, Julia Stiles "" to a story we think we've seen
before… [more]

UCSC alum Mo
Perkins bellies up to the Santa Cruz Film Fest with a tale about love and birth
in the American marriage.
by Richard von Busack for the Santa Cruz Weekly
I'm still not quite sure if it's a comedy or a
drama, but one of the highlights of this year's Santa Cruz Film Fest is former
Santa Cruzan Mo Perkins' A Quiet Little Marriage. The Grand Jury Award winner
at this year's Slamdance concerns an appropriately thorny topic: the question
of whether or not a couple ought to bring another baby into the world, with all
the things he or she will need for the non-negotiable American way of life... [more]
